What is American Sign Language?

American Sign Language (ASL) is the primary language of most Deaf Canadians. It is a visual perceived language based on naturally evolved system of articulated hand gestures and their placement relative to the body, along with non-manual markers such as facial expression, head movements, shoulder raises, mouth morphemes, and movements of the body. ASL is a complete, natural language that has the same linguistic properties as spoken languages, with grammar that differs from English.

The Signing Naturally series is recognized as the curriculum in North America for those who wish to learn ASL. Our classes are a”no-voice” teaching method is used to reinforce the learning experience. CAD have 8 courses ranging from beginners to advanced

  • Beginner courses are designed to introduce students to ASL. Concepts discussed relates to people, places, and things within the immediate environment. Students will learn to handle basic, everyday communications such as exchanging information, identifying and/or describing others, and asking for clarification.
  • Intermediate courses emphasize language in context: locating things, learning numeracy, making request with inflection, talking about life events and family histories, describing objects and having social conversation.
  • Advanced course focus on building narrative skills, moving from an informal to a more formal presentation, and on developing conversation skills used in everyday discussion.

Learning any language takes a great deal of time, energy and commitment. To be able to sign is only part of the process. You must be able to understand ASL signed by a native user. People learn at different rates so it’s difficult to predict how long it will take to learn ASL. If you are active in the Deaf community, you will speed up your pace learning ASL.
